We point the spotlight on 13 vegan and vegetarian-minded restaurants in The Land. Whether you're in it for dietary or ethical reasons (or both) or you just want to lighten up for the summer, these places have great offerings. And we offer some bonus spots at the end to hunt for, if you're so inclined.

You can never go wrong with a visit to Tommy’s Restaurant, located at 1824 Coventry Rd. in Cleveland Heights. Vegan, vegetarian, meat-eater, Tommy Fello has you covered. Mention to wait staff that you’re vegetarian? You might get an eyeroll or the compulsory, “Oh, I’m sure the chef can whip up some kind of veggie pasta.

Mention to wait staff that you’re vegetarian? You might get an eyeroll or the compulsory, “Oh, I’m sure the chef can whip up some kind of veggie pasta.”Most people know that The Land has a robust dining scene and with it, a bounty of vegan- and vegetarian-focused places that do far more than just offer options. On the other side of Cleveland VegFest, we thought it might be worth exploring some of the area’s better spots to frequent.3 Reasons to see Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire at Blossom Music Center on Tuesday, July 16Kindland: ‘Kids That Tri’ builds confidence, strength, poise though triathlete training for inner-city youth These haunts cater to their audiences in the most delightful ways. But you don’t have to be vegan or vegetarian to enjoy the light, healthy eats and drinks they offer. Here are 13 of them:. Everyone immediately zeroes in on the “Bravocado” sandwich – you can sit down, avocado toast! – we’re endlessly tickled by the menu references to Brian Eno, Lou Reed, Elvis Presley, Iron Maiden, Smashing Pumpkins, Beck and…? But no one makes it on wit, quirk and being “delightfully scrappy” alone; their juice, smoothie and café menus are all top-notch and have been for years. But like many things at the Lakewood haunt, they're good, true and absolutely delicious. - Photo courtesy of Elizabeth B., via YelpLabeled “Vegan Food & Retail,” this Highland Heights spot was born of necessity, raised by invention. “We got tired of driving to the west side of Cleveland for delicious vegan food and decided to open an all-vegan cafe right in our backyard,” says the website. Makes sense to us and everyone streaming out of the place! Fantastic fast casual, grab-and-go hits on all kinds of notes, from breakfast to daily specials. Vegan clubs, flatbreads and burritos – oh my!A vegan delicatessen? Yes. Everything that your heart desires from a deli is scratch-made and curated by chef-owner Todd Kronika. This quaint little spot has sandwiches, salads and other “deli classics” that rotate on a dry-erase board menu. The Lakewood spot is a go-to for everything from “pork” roll and a “ham” and pesto to tofu skewers and a giardiniera sub that is teeming with crisp veg. Bonus: you can play a little Galaga or Ms. Pac-Man waiting for your order. What began as a catering company a little over a decade ago has become a west-side epicenter for vegans and vegetarians. An impressive array of café and baked goods fill the menus with from-scratch goodness. Bonus, the vibe is great. It’s hard not to fall in love with the place. Bonus: They support local purveyors like Cleveland Tofu, Wake Robin and more. We want the crispy tofu tacos and seitan gyros, stat.Stepping into this buzzy cocktail lounge and vegan spot is tantamount to visiting Dumbledore’s library or some other bastion of dark academia. The menus are mysteriously named, limited edition. Flavor profiles are unique, impeccably paired. In our recent visits, we’ve had Spring Pea Bruschetta, Fondant Potatoes and a Veggie Muffaletta with herb-roasted tofu and charred peppers. Just don’t get attached or fall in love because the menu changes. This neighborhood staple has been successful for one important reason: They know that some of their diners want options. To wit, everything on Earth Bistro Café's everyday and breakfast menus is either vegan to start – or can be made vegan with a small upcharge. The idea that you can grab delicious diner fare without excluding anyone in your party is attractive. That everything is so tasty makes it even better. An ethics-first spot where every dish is 100% vegan, no distributors or products from animal-testing companies, non-GMO produce, compostable dinnerware and so on. The inventiveness of the menu is impeccable: chive-ginger dumplings, two kinds of banh mi sandwiches, barbecued tofu wings, daikon cakes with shitake mushrooms, a Korean Reuben with bulgogi seitan… vegan or not, you’ll marvel at the deliciousness. They’re next door to Mister Brisket. From the Tommy's appetizer menu: Brown rice, carrots, kale, scallions, mushrooms and broccoli served with a side of tamari and toasted sunflower seeds. Not gonna lie, they had us at the “Hail Seitan Cheesesteak.” But if you need convincing, this fantastic vegan comfort food menu will do it. Cauliflower wings, Monster tots with cashew “cheese,” smash burgers, a full bar and the ability to “make it fancy” with fresh-grated burgundy black truffle to any item for an upcharge certainly ups the appeal. Plenty to love here.We can’t make a list like this without mentioning this O.G. contingent at a Bridge Avenue corner in Ohio City. A fun little spot named for a fictional traveler has been motoring along since 1996, winning hearts and minds with world-influenced menu that’s light, fresh and does plenty to accommodate vegan/vegetarian visitors. Outside of their “Ballad of Meatless and Delicious” items, they have a vegan pad thai and can pivot their brunch menu to sub in tofu scramble for eggs. Don’t miss the Diablo margaritas. This Waterloo neighborhood hotspot has items like a vegan Polish Boy on its menu, along with Phillys, burgers and rice bowls. Plenty of juice and smoothie options available here as well, all on the grab-and-go café tip. Their goal is to “provide light and tasty foods that support healthy living choices while maintaining flavor!” but also not to punish yourself. We can’t think of a better post-workout treat than a banana split smoothie made with a coconut milk base. Johnny Mango World Cafe & Bar's jackfruit tacos are one of their monthly specials that caters to the vegetarian audience. When jackfruit is prepared, it tastes a lot like chicken.Come for the coffee and pastry, stay for the meal. “The Root” has been a longtime favorite of Lakewoodites with a vegetarian kitchen that also pumps out a heckuva lot of vegan items. The menu is overflowing with starters, sandwiches, salads, beans and rice dishes, breakfast, pizzas and even calzones. Organic fruits and veggies are de rigueur; sauces and spreads are made from scratch. The conviviality, buzz and bustle from the regulars really puts the place over the top.The other O.G. contingent on this list. Tommy Fello has been serving Coventry Village forever, with a diverse, inclusive and infinitely craveable menu. His spot started as “a small soda fountain” in 1972. Not long after, Rolling Stone magazine voted that they had the “Best Milkshake East of the Mississippi.” They weren’t wrong. You can score a great burger and fries, but with the vastness of options, score me a Cee Bee or Aunt Rose falafel sandwich and black cherry yogurt shake anytime The Aunt Rose pita sandwich at Tommy's is a comfort food classic, vegetarian friendly. A vegan version called the Wildflower subs in a couple different ingredients.Any place that advertises that they’re so good, you’ll forget they’re vegan is doing something right . We love VC’s “Fun Buns” menu, which features classic takes on American sammies with vegan substitutes for chicken, bacon, beef and more. They have a hearty slate of “main dish” items too, which are decently portioned and satisfying – items like cashew-based alfredo pasta, pecan Bolognese and an oyster mushroom-based po’ boy. Kudos must also go out to the following spots: Anna in the Raw/Good to Go Café, Aladdin’s Barrio, Boaz, Brassica, Condado, Corner 11 Bowl & Wrap, Kantina, Melt Bar & Grilled, Nature’s Oasis and Rebol.Bonus shoutout to the Vegan Doughnut Co., who, through being wholly dedicated to vegan sweets, has moved bakeries and doughnut purveyors across Northeast Ohio to do likewise.
