CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority held a public hearing Tuesday where riders voiced concerns about proposed service cuts to nine routes across the region.
Theresa Ferman, who lives in downtown Cleveland and takes the B-Line trolley daily, was among about two dozen people who attended the hearing. “I take the trolley, it’s efficient, helps me get to where I need to go, and the nice thing is it’s free,” Ferman said.“I hope the trolley stays, I really hope so, it’s such an asset to have in downtown Cleveland,” Ferman said.
RTA official Joel Freilich said the cuts are necessary because the agency received federal funding during the COVID pandemic, but with rising costs, the money is running out. “We made a financial plan that was designed to last until 2028, but we have found recently, with some anticipated increase in costs, that it needs some adjustments to get us there,” Freilich said.
The transit authority originally considered a 12 percent service reduction, but scaled back the plan to limit the impact on riders. “It became our task to identify how can we reduce service by three percent with the least hardship on riders,” Freilich said.
If approved, the cuts would save the RTA $2.5 million annually, and no drivers would lose their jobs. Not everyone at the hearing opposed the cuts. At least one RTA driver spoke in favor of certain route reductions.
The next public comment hearing is scheduled for Thursday, April 16, at 8:30 a.m. The RTA will accept public comments until April 27, after which it will review all feedback before making a final decision.
