CLEVELAND, Ohio - The busy intersection of W St. Clair Avenue and W 3rd Street in downtown Cleveland remains closed about three weeks after a massive sinkhole opened up.Time-lapse video shows the moment the street collapsed near the Justice Center , almost swallowing a driver and his car into the sinkhole.
Michele, who lives in downtown Cleveland, says, “It’s a little shocking that it happened. But is it surprising? No. I think the city has to do a good job of assessing the age of the streets, the pipelines, and other infrastructure. The waterlines.”Andy, who lives at The Standard just a block away, tells 19 News, “I definitely want to see it resolved as soon as possible. The noise has been a little louder here downtown, plus on this road and everywhere. So, it will certainly be nice when it’s all kind of wrapped up, and we get back to normal.” Others say it’s the forced detour that’s been a pain for those who live, work, and visit the area, which has them tired of the disruption.A man who lives nearby but did not give his name said, “I do notice a lot of traffic is being diverted, and has to go around. A friend had to drop me off around the corner recently.” In a statement, Danielle Miklos, the Manager, Communications for the City of Cleveland’s Division of Water, said the various utilities involved are in the process of making the necessary repairs. “As previously stated, the work is complex and requires careful coordination among multiple utilities.
