CLEVELAND , Ohio - A district court decided Friday to set a status conference to further discuss the city of Cleveland ’s termination of its consent decree .

Information from a court docket reveals the city has ways to go before it can terminate its more than 10-year-old consent decree. The decree was originally put in place in 2015 when the U.S. Department of Justice ruled that the Cleveland Community Police Commission was violating parts of the U.S. Constitution.

“Cleveland has made real progress under the consent decree, and that progress belongs to our residents, officers and community partners,” Mayor Justin M. Bibb said. “While we are disappointed by today’s decision, our commitment to constitutional policing, accountability and building trust has not changed.

” The court has set the status conference for June 4 at 3 p.m. and advises the city to be ready to discuss its relationship with the police commission after the commission itself disagreed with the call to terminate the decree.
