Nothing is really firing me up today. Apparently, I have reached the stage of the offseason where contract restructures, consultant hires, quarterback speculation, and former college players getting diplomas all arrive in the same pile, and I expect myself to arrange it all into something resembling meaning.
This is, of course, what the coffee is for. Tragically, the coffee is not really working, perhaps thanks to a yapping dog who decided to drink an entire bowl of water before bed and then, unsurprisingly, woke me up in the middle of the night, panicking about having to go to the bathroom. Stupid dog.
Now she’s making me look zombie-like as I write an article that will be consumed by the entire world, or, at least, a half-dozen friends, coerced relatives, and people forced to grab at anything to read while they wait for their delayed airplane flight.. Jones remains one of the more interesting pieces of the offensive line puzzle, partly because he is enormous, partly because the Browns have spent the 2026 draft throwing fresh lumber into the room, and partly because nothing says early May like wondering how many tackles are actually guards if you stare at the depth chart long enough.
Jones’ size makes him an injury risk, and one gets the impression that the Browns were able to use the doubt that creates to give him a new deal to save cap space, offering more guaranteed money to make it palatable. This seems similar to the Jerome Ford deal last year. , because Jimmy Haslam has no issue writing checks to consultants on the off-chance it helps the team win another game.
I used to be a consultant, but not the type that the NFL employs. Now I’m a webdork, but again, not the type the NFL employs. I’m not irritated at the NFL about this, as it’s a clear sign that there is, indeed, a sort of human-like intelligence running these organizations and powering a level of discernment about who is worthy of receiving a W-2 or 1099 tax form.
The quarterback room, because this is Cleveland and the universe insists, continues to occupy its usual oxygen supply. Shedeur Sanders, which is a nice human thing that will inevitably be processed through the industrial quarterback-content machine. The boards are also, and whether supplemental draft smoke is smoke, steam, fog, or just May humidity.
Of course, the murmuring from the recent rumor that Deshaun Watson is May third’s QB1 is still out there, but I’m trying to pretend it doesn’t exist.if you missed the latest tour through quarterbacks, stadiums, and civic finance fog. Over on the boards, folks are discussing roster holes,, and Kentucky Derby Day, which means the OBR community remains a place where intelligent people gather to talk about the Browns despite their unexpectedly kind comments in response to my attempts at writing.
I prize the daily thread that pops up alongside the Massive Morning Missive. So today is for sorting. Sort the contract tweak from the roster projection. Sort the Njoku rumor from the long-term tight end question.
Sort the quarterback noise from the actual reps that have not yet happened. The Browns are still assembling the thing, and we are still trying to figure out whether the box came with all the parts. The instruction manual, tragically, appears written in Sanskrit.
