Heatstroke. Carbon monoxide poisoning. Drug overdose. Hit by a car. Cancer. Those are some of the ways hundreds of people in San Antonio who didn't have a home are believed to have lost their lives this year. The number of people who died while homeless has nearly doubled each year since the pandemic. This past year, the number surpassed even that, marking an all time high: 364 people died while experiencing homelessness, according to SAMMinistries.

About 25% were older than 60. Of the total number of people who were homeless who died this past year, 23 — less than 10% — were veterans.

'No one should die on the street without a home, but sadly far too many people are dying this way,' Nirenberg. He also spoke of the collaborative effort underway to prevent homelessness and vowed that the work would continue.
