The U.S. Department of Transportation is investigating Chinese-made airbag inflators, linked to multiple fatalities and serious injuries in recent vehicle crashes. These inflators, made by DTN (Jilin Province Detiannuo Safety Technology Co., Ltd.), are suspected of exploding and sending metal fragments toward drivers, leading to potentially preventable deaths. A permanent ban on these illegal components is under consideration.
U.S. transportation authorities are contemplating a permanent ban on Chinese-made air bag inflators, implicated in several fatal crashes in recent years. These components originate from DTN , also known as Jilin Province Detiannuo Safety Technology Co. , Ltd. , a Chinese airbag supplier. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a part of the Department of Transportation, initiated an investigation into DTN inflators in October 2025. Despite being prohibited from sale in the U.S.
, these inflators have been discovered installed in American vehicles, according to the agency. This month, NHTSA attributed the DTN airbag inflators to 10 fatalities and two severe injuries across a dozen crashes that occurred since May 2023. These crashes unfolded across ten states, including Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Arizona, Utah, California, Kansas, Ohio, and Missouri. Instead of inflating to protect drivers, these inflators exploded, scattering metal fragments into drivers' chests, necks, eyes, and faces, NHTSA reported. The agency asserted that the injuries leading to the fatalities should have been survivable. NHTSA suggested the airbag component was likely illegally imported into the U.S. so, therefore, not up to current U.S. safety standards. \Currently, NHTSA is only aware of incidents involving Chevrolet Malibu and Hyundai Sonata vehicles; however, there is no existing data to suggest the issue is isolated to these specific vehicles. NHTSA has issued an urgent advisory for drivers whose vehicles have been involved in prior crashes where the airbags deployed, urging them to examine their vehicle's history and ascertain whether they might be operating a vehicle equipped with a DTN air bag inflator, due to the risk of serious injury or death. NHTSA is also encouraging used vehicle owners and prospective buyers to research vehicle history to verify the presence of approved air bag inflators. Vehicle inspections are recommended if they were involved in a prior crash with airbag deployment since 2020 and were not repaired by a manufacturer's dealership. If there is confirmation that your vehicle has never been in a crash or had its airbags replaced under unspecified circumstances, then this issue does not apply to you. \NHTSA continues to probe the number of these inflators that have illicitly entered the United States and will determine whether a permanent sales ban is necessary. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy remarked, Our initial probe into the use of illegal Chinese airbags in auto shops has unveiled a worrying trend: these below-standard parts are causing the deaths of American families. The Trump Administration will keep up the fight to keep you and your family safe on our roads. If a DTN inflator is discovered in your vehicle, driving should be immediately discontinued, action should be taken to have it replaced, and the illegal product must be reported to law enforcement and NHTSA. This information is available to the public. These air bag inflators are not presently subject to a recall. As it seems these inflators were likely imported illegally, and no list of the affected vehicles is available, a conventional recall is not probable, as stated by NHTSA. The investigation is ongoing to understand the scope and implications of this issue, aiming to ensure that all drivers and passengers are safe on U.S. roads
