With too few classrooms to accommodate its students, East Central Independent School District is desperate for more space — but it's stuck for now without a way to pay for it. East Central voters on Nov. 5 rejected a $360 million bond and property tax rate increase, which were split into four ballot measures. All of them failed.
She thinks bond fatigue played a bigger role. 'Hearing another one coming so close on the tail end of that, I think it was like election overload — election burnout. They just didn’t want it. They didn’t want to pay more taxes,' she said. Magott also said many East Central residents believe developers — who are buying up land in the district — should help pay for new schools. But district officials said those developers have no legal obligation to do so.
