China to Launch Water-Seeking Mission to Moon's South Pole in 2024
CHINALUNAR MISSIONWATER ICE

China's ambitious Chang'e 7 mission will explore the lunar south pole in search of water ice, deploying a large rover, a lander, and a unique hopper.

China is gearing up for a groundbreaking lunar mission in 2024, aiming to uncover definitive proof of water at the moon's south pole. The Chang'e 7 mission will deploy a sophisticated suite of equipment, including a large rover, a lander, and a novel small hopper designed to explore the region's shadowy craters. This mission marks a significant leap forward in lunar exploration.

The hopper, described as a 'first-of-its-kind lunar explorer,' will possess the unique ability to leap from sunlit areas into the darkness of lunar craters. Equipped with a molecule analyzer, it will search for telltale signs of water ice. The lander, meanwhile, will utilize China's inaugural deep-space 'landmark image navigation' system, ensuring pinpoint accuracy during its descent. Furthermore, the hopper incorporates active shock-absorption technology, guaranteeing a safe landing on potentially uneven slopes. The discovery of water ice on the moon would be a monumental achievement, potentially unlocking valuable resources for future lunar endeavors. These resources could be utilized for various purposes, such as providing supplies for astronauts or even serving as propellant for future moon rovers, much like China's existing 'Jade Rabbit' rovers. However, Chang'e 7's rover will be larger and designed to carry different payloads, showcasing China's ambition to expand its lunar presence. This mission is part of a larger two-pronged approach by China to establish a permanent lunar base. Chang'e 8, slated for launch around 2028, will focus on testing in-situ resource utilization techniques, potentially paving the way for self-sustaining lunar outposts. Beyond China's endeavors, NASA is also advancing plans to send its own water-seeking mission to the lunar south pole. The VIPER rover, a mobile spacecraft, is scheduled to embark on its quest for lunar water in the coming years. This international race to uncover lunar water highlights the growing significance of this celestial body in the context of space exploration and the pursuit of humanity's future beyond Earth
