EUCLID, Ohio - On the two year anniversary of the murder of Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin , a news release announced his estate has sued the city, Police Chief Scott Meyer , several officers and supervisors of the Euclid Police Department , and multiple employees and officials of Chagrin Valley Dispatch.
“Jacob believed in the values behind the badge — integrity, service, loyalty, and doing what was right. He trusted the system he served. That trust failed him. After Jacob’s death, and as the investigation and follow-up by EPD unfolded, it became clear that his department had failed him long before he was shot.
It also became clear that the investigation left many important questions unanswered about why and how he died," said Dawn Derbin. The lawsuit alleges the police department failed to “adequately prepare him and fellow officers, and after dispatch officials and EPD supervisors failed to properly initiate a safe call response. ” 19 News reached out to the city of Euclid, the Euclid Police Department, and Chagrin Valley Dispatch for comment.
“We have seen the reports regarding a potential lawsuit; however, Chagrin Valley Dispatch has not yet been served with a complaint. As a matter of policy, we do not comment on pending or threatened litigation. Once we have had the opportunity to receive and formally review the filing with our legal counsel, we will respond through the appropriate legal channels.
” Officer Derbin, 23, died on May 11, 2024 after Deshawn Vaughn ambushed him and opened fire during a domestic dispute call on East 211th Street. Fellow law enforcement officers found Vaughn dead in a Shaker Heights apartment building after a multi-hour long standoff on Sunday, May 12, 2024. On Tuesday, May 14, 2024, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner announced Vaughn died from a self-inflected gunshot wound to the head.
He was engaged to his high school sweetheart and their wedding was scheduled for July 27, 2024. Only 11 weeks after the day of his death.
“Jacob believed in protecting others and in doing the right thing. Honoring his life means fighting not only for answers, but for accountability, transparency, and reforms that keep everyone safe,” said Dawn Derbin.
