It’s not often that a story can hold both heartbreak and hope at the same time, but the Friendship Animal Protective League (APL) said this one does.
LORAIN, Ohio - It’s not often that a story can hold both heartbreak and hope at the same time, but the Friendship Animal Protective League said this one does.
There was a report of smoke inside the residence, and when firefighters arrived they encountered light smoke conditions and a kitchen fire. In a rare twist, the Friendship APL said the fire had been partially suppressed when heat melted solder on a nearby water pipe, causing it to spray water similar to a sprinkler system. Two residents were displaced in the fire, but tragically 27 cats and one dog lost their lives in the fire.
As first responders moved through the home, Friendship APL said it became clear that even before the fire, the animals had been living in extremely unsanitary and overcrowded conditions. Since situations like this are complex and difficult to witness, the Friendship APL said its main focus remains on compassion for both the people and animals affected.
An emergency order was placed on the property, which meant the Friendship APL team had to prioritize setting traps to search for any surviving animals. The Lorain Building and Housing Department stayed in close contact with the Friendship APL, working closely to find any potential survivors. When hope seemed lost, insurance inspectors spotted movement in the debris, and a cat was found still alive.
Friendship APL quickly stepped in to respond, and said it is incredibly grateful to share that one cat, Phoenix, was rescued. Just like his name suggests, Phoenix rose from the ashes and despite everything he endured, he showed nothing but affection. He greeted staff with gentle headbutts and a steady purr, a reminder of the resilience animals carry even after unimaginable trauma.
The Friendship APL said it is beyond thankful that at least one life was saved, and how impossible it is to not grieve the ones lost. This incident is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly tragedy can unfold, and how important it is to reach out for help before conditions become overwhelming.
Friendship APL said it extends its sincere gratitude to the Lorain Fire Department, Lorain County Public Health and the Lorain Building and Housing Department for their response. coordination and the continued support throughout this incident.
