Carys Douglas, the 23-year-old daughter of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, is making waves in the theater world by producing an Off-Broadway play. Following her graduation from Brown University, Carys has launched an open call for script submissions, with the selected play set to be performed in a prestigious Off-Broadway venue. This venture marks a significant step in her career as she follows in the footsteps of her Oscar-winning parents, both of whom built their careers in theater before transitioning to film.
Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas ' daughter Carys Douglas has made a significant leap into the world of theater, securing a major role in an Off-Broadway production just months after graduating from Brown University.
At 23, Carys has taken on the ambitious project of producing a play in New York City, inviting aspiring playwrights to submit their scripts for consideration. Through an Instagram post, she announced an open call for submissions, promising that the selected play would be performed in a rehearsal space at one of Off-Broadway's premier theater houses. Rehearsals are slated to begin next month, with performances expected in mid-July, and the submission deadline for playwrights is set for May 14.
Carys is co-producing the project with Teniayo-Ola Macaulay, a friend she met while studying film and international relations at Brown University in Rhode Island. The daughter of acclaimed actors Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, Carys has been immersed in the arts from a young age. She shared with People magazine last October that while she didn't study acting formally, her lifelong involvement in theater has prepared her for this venture.
Her parents, both Oscar winners, have long been supportive of her artistic pursuits, though they have also cautioned her about the challenges of the industry. Catherine, now 56, began her career in theater as a child in Wales, joining a dance troupe and later landing a role in the West End production of Annie at just nine years old.
By 15, she had left school to pursue acting full-time in London, eventually winning an Oscar for her role in Chicago and a Tony Award for her Broadway debut in A Little Night Music. Michael, 81, started his career at The American Place Theatre in New York and later gained recognition through productions at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in the 1960s.
Despite their reservations about the entertainment industry, Catherine and Michael have always encouraged their children's passion for the arts. Catherine admitted in 2021 that while they might have suggested alternative careers, their children's dedication to acting as a craft was undeniable. Carys and her brother Dylan, 25, who graduated from Brown in 2022, have both pursued careers in entertainment while engaging in political activism.
Dylan hosts a weekly Gen Z political radio program called Young American with Dylan Douglas and has appeared in films such as the psychological thriller I Will Come to You. Carys, meanwhile, has already gained experience in the industry with acting credits in the 2024 short films Shell and F**k That Guy, the latter of which premiered at the Champs-Élysées Film Festival in Paris.
During her time at Brown, she interned at Rolling Stone magazine, where she wrote articles on film and music, and at Ark Media, assisting on a documentary about Hollywood star Tatum O'Neal. She also spent a year abroad at King's College London, studying International Relations and Affairs. With her latest venture into Off-Broadway production, Carys is carving her own path in the arts while honoring the legacy of her parents' illustrious careers
