Out of more than 155 educators across the state, one Dothan teacher has earned a place among Alabama’s top 16, putting her one step closer to the title. Jessica Freeman has spent 22 years teaching and now turns numbers into something sixth graders at Carver Math Science and Technology actually want to learn.“It’s a little surreal. It’s definitely a huge honor. It was something that I didn’t really expect,” Freeman said.
“It is the students that I teach. I teach some amazing students and it’s really rewarding for me to see my students be successful,” she said.
“I want them to feel like they’re a part of something when they’re in my classroom, like they belong and they are a part of that room and that family that we create in there,” she said. As the school year winds down, that family is about to move on. In a few weeks, her sixth graders will walk out of Carver for the last time. “Just seeing that growth is big and very rewarding. And it’s sad in a little way because they’re getting ready to go off, they’re leaving Carver, going on to seventh grade next year,” Freeman said.
The 16 finalists, which also includes local educator Courtney Amanda Davidson from Zion Chapel High School, will soon be narrowed to four, with Alabama’s Teacher of the Year announced in May.
