Drivers Forced to Scrap Roadworthy Cars as Tax Costs Soar

Outrage as older, reliable cars are rendered uneconomical to run due to soaring vehicle excise duty rates, with some owners facing annual tax bills of up to £790.

Drivers across the country are facing the frustrating situation of being compelled to dispose of perfectly functional vehicles due to the dramatically increasing costs associated with vehicle excise duty , commonly known as road tax .

Cars aged between nine and twenty years, despite being in excellent mechanical condition and consistently passing MOT tests without any required repairs, are becoming financially unsustainable to operate due to successive tax increases implemented by the current government. This disproportionately affects families who rely on affordable transportation, with annual tax bills reaching as high as £790 for some vehicles.

Numerous concerned motorists have contacted media outlets to express their dismay, citing examples ranging from Saabs and Mazdas to Mercedes and Jaguars being driven off the road. The tax burden often exceeds the vehicle's value, with older cars sometimes incurring tax costs four times greater than newer, potentially more polluting, luxury vehicles like Lamborghinis or Ferraris. This also impacts cherished modern classic cars, which are dwindling in numbers as owners struggle to afford the ongoing financial strain.

The core of the problem lies in a combination of outdated vehicle excise duty regulations and consistent rate hikes aimed at increasing government revenue. The current system, applied to cars registered between March 2001 and March 2017, bases tax on carbon emissions, originally categorized into bands A to K. Subsequent additions of bands L and M in 2006 further increased charges for vehicles exceeding 225g/km of CO2 emissions, initially targeting large SUVs.

However, this also affected many popular family cars and affordable high-performance models that are now gaining collector status. While a flat rate system was introduced in 2017 for newer vehicles, older cars remain subject to the previous banded system, with rates increasing annually in line with the Retail Price Index, despite the declining value of these vehicles.

The recent increase on April 1st has pushed VED costs for cars in bands L and M to £760 and £790 respectively, a stark contrast to the £200 standard rate for post-2017 models, even for high-end vehicles like Aston Martins and Bentleys. Surprisingly, even older, inherently more polluting vehicles registered before March 2001 can be cheaper to tax.

The situation is causing significant hardship for car owners like Graham Hoyle, 76, who replaced his diesel Saab with a petrol estate, only to find the tax doubled to £760 annually. He explains that he switched to a cleaner fuel type with both financial and environmental considerations in mind, but the unexpected tax increase has been a major shock.

Similarly, retired engineer Fred Whittaker, 79, faces a £445 annual tax bill for each of his two Jaguars, fearing they will be scrapped prematurely due to the financial burden. These stories highlight a growing trend of dependable and treasured cars being priced off the road by a tax system perceived as unfair.

The issue isn't simply about the cost of driving; it's about the government's policies inadvertently penalizing responsible car owners and potentially accelerating the scrapping of vehicles that still have years of useful life left, contributing to unnecessary waste and impacting those who rely on affordable transportation
