For Elijah Blanchard, the conviction of Ibraheem Yazeed for the murder of his daughter, Aniah, brings a sense of closure more than six years after she was killed in 2019.
“The person that was, you know, responsible for my daughter’s disappearance, is going to be behind bars,” said Blanchard. “So, I think this is most definitely a win for us as a family, most definitely justice for Aniah.
” Yazeed was convicted Thursday, March 19 of felony murder and murder after a nearly three-week long trial in Macon County.During the trial, state prosecutors were seeking Yazeed’s conviction on two counts of capital murder: kidnapping and robbery. Because Yazeed was convicted on lesser charges, he won’t face the death penalty.“The state had to argue circumstantial evidence, which was, you know, it’s hard to prove,” said Blanchard. “But the state did a really good job. And with them being able to convict him with murder and felony murder, I’m still, I’m thankful and grateful.”“For to get up there and talk about the last time he was able to visit with his sister, laugh with his sister, hug his sister, and tell his sister goodbye...It spoke volumes to what kind of character my son has, and I’m really proud he was able to do that,” Blanchard said.Blanchard said he hopes the judge will consider what was lost with Aniah’s death and give Yazeed the maximum penalty he faces: Life in prison. “She was more than just a name on evidence,” said Blanchard. “She was more than a case in a courtroom.” “She had a future. And now she don’t have that, he took a life that mattered to a lot of people,” Blanchard said. “And justice, for me, the judge would most definitely exercise his authority to give him the maximum sentence allowed by the state of Alabama by the laws.”1 dead in overnight Montgomery triple shootingShellhorn community breaks ground on new fire station
