) - Candy and soda may soon be ineligible for SNAP purchases under a bill passed by the Alabama House Tuesday afternoon. Senate Bill 57 makes distinctive exceptions for baking products, jellies, jams and powdered drink mixes, among other products.
There was also an amendment on the floor Tuesday to add energy drinks to the list of ineligible products.United States Department of Agriculture , more than 20 states have received approval to add similar restrictions to their state SNAP programs. “I think now the feds have seen that it needs to be cleaned up,” said sponsor Rep. Reed Ingram . “ was not intended for candy bars and coca colas. It was intended for healthier nutritional food, and I think that’s where we are today.” However, House democrats pushed back on the bill, saying it was imposing restrictions that unfairly targeted people on government assistance. “Families only get a couple hundred bucks a month, and I don’t want us to make the families or the people who create these products, make them the bad guys here,” said Rep. Kelvin Datcher . Alabama’s Senate voted not to concur with Senate Bill 57 as amended by the House, which means that the bill would have to be passed by a conference committee. A conference committee is a group of members from both chambers that are asked to come to an agreement between House and Senate versions of a bill. There is a meeting scheduled for 9 a.m. central in Montgomery that is labeled SB57 conference committee meeting.
