Peet described how her family, who were entirely removed from the entertainment industry – her father being a corporate lawyer and her mother a psychotherapist and social worker – initially viewed her aspirations with considerable skepticism, even comparing it to less respectable professions.
Peet confessed that her parents' perception of acting was far from the glamour often associated with Hollywood. She recounted how they viewed her chosen profession, stating, “I feel like they saw acting in the beginning, similar to just ‘Oh, so you want to start modeling, or you want to be a hooker.’” This perception, rooted in their unfamiliarity with the arts, created an initial disconnect and a pressure to prove the validity of her chosen field.
The actress further elaborated on the internal conflict this created, especially when she found herself booking roles she considered less prestigious. She admitted, “Anything that was like considered more low-brow... I could kill it. And so then I was undoing what I wanted to portray to my parents. Because I’d be like, ‘Well, I’m on a Skittles commercial.’ And they’d be like, ‘I rest my case.’” This sentiment echoed her own experiences with her children, highlighting a shared human tendency to shy away from challenges that induce anxiety. She related this to her children’s apprehension when faced with more challenging opportunities, explaining, “Because they were too nervous! So I gave them my f---ing anxiety,” she added with a sigh, recognizing a transference of her own past anxieties.
Despite these early familial doubts, Peet has achieved remarkable success, with her latest performance in the Apple TV+ dramedy garnering widespread praise. She highlighted the kindness of Jason Bateman, a friend and former co-star, who visited her mother in the hospital numerous times. She also expressed deep appreciation for her bosses, 'Tropper and Jon Hamm,' who were exceptionally understanding and supportive, allowing her the flexibility to be present with her family during their final days. 'Like I have very special bosses, I have to say,' she concluded, underscoring the profound impact of their compassion.
