The Dimond Center in Anchorage transformed into a dragon’s den Friday.
Nine teams representing various engineering firms throughout the city took to their designated “CANstruction” zones to construct large sculptures out of cans and boxes of soon-to-be-donated food. The event has taken place 17 times since its inception in 2008, according to Leo Artola, food donation coordinator for Anchorage Food Bank, and continually serves a valuable purpose for the group.
“If people donate one time during the year, it’s probably during the holidays,” Artola explained. “But what happens is we tend to see a pretty big decline in donations going into the summer and kind of in the spring season as well. So, this event comes at a time when the last of that food is starting to leave our warehouse.” To combat that, all the food used to construct the sculptures will help fill the food bank after the contest concludes. As for the teams themselves, they had until midnight Friday night to bring their visions to life in accordance with this year’s theme: dragons. The creations are up for a total of six potential awards, none more coveted than the publicly voted People’s Choice Award. “There’s some pretty good teams this year,” Team Dowl/Michael Baker/HDR member Elena Feghali observed. “I’ve seen some of the dragons out there that are not quite done yet.” “We’re here to stay first,” defending champion Team KUNA/NANA’s Nick Straka said. “We’re serious about this. We’re here to stay, we’re here to win.”Anchorage votes on propositions & Assembly, school board seatsOver $65K worth of unreported fish eggs seized by authorities in Dutch HarborOver 40 guns seized after SWAT standoff at Fairbanks home amid alleged union hall attack plot ‘I wish I had an answer:’ Mat-Su Borough stops pumping as 3rd day of flooding continues in neighborhoodAnchorage votes on propositions & Assembly, school board seats
