Duke freshman forward Cameron Boozer has been named the 2026 Associated Press’s Men’s Basketball National Player of the Year.
and the top overall seed for the March Madness national tournament. Boozer’s the fifth freshman to earn that title. The 6-foot-9-inch 250-pound Boozer plays for the Blue Devils alongside his twin brother Cayden.
Cameron averaged 22.5 points, 10.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists his freshman season. As the fifth freshman to be named National Player of the Year, Boozer joins the ranks of four other players who each went either number one or two in the NBA draft that year. “I’m very grateful just that I’m even in those conversations,” Boozer said. “Sometimes you’ve got to take a step back and just remember that once upon a time, you were a kid dreaming to be here.” Duke lost in the Elite Eight round of the tournament this year in a 73-72 loss to UConn last weekend. His father Carlos Jr. made a legacy that began in Alaska. A four-year varsity player at Juneau-Douglas High School, he led his teams to a 95-12 record and back-to-back state championships in 1997 and 1998. After signing with Duke, Boozer played for the Blue Devils from 1999 to 2002, earning first-team All-ACC and third-team All-American honors as well as a national championship in 2001. “Whoever thought a young kid from Juneau, Alaska, would create something like this?” Carlos Boozer Sr., Cameron’s grandfather, said about the family legacy in an— the first Alaskan basketball player ever to receive that honor — as part of the 2008 U.S. Olympic “Redeem Team” that won gold at the Beijing Olympics.Man dies after being pulled out of avalanche while heliskiing907 Sports: Introducing UAA Men’s Basketball’s New Head Coach, plus Alaska’s Largest Indoor Track MeetSeawolves announce familiar face as new men’s head basketball coach AOTW: From the kitchen table to state supremacy, Ridgeway family leads Mountain City to another championship
