Calla Walsh, once a celebrated teenage activist for Senator Ed Markey, has become a radicalized anti-American figure living in Beirut, chanting 'Death to America' and celebrating the deaths of US soldiers. Her journey from progressive icon to extremist highlights the dangers of radicalization among young activists.
Calla Walsh , once hailed as a rising star of progressive politics, has undergone a dramatic transformation from a teenage activist to a radicalized anti-American figure.
At just 16 years old, Walsh gained national attention in 2020 for her pivotal role in Senator Ed Markey's successful reelection campaign in Massachusetts. As the leader of the Markeyverse, a Gen-Z activist group, she employed innovative social media strategies that helped the underdog candidate defeat former Representative Joseph P. Kennedy III. Media outlets like the New York Times and NPR praised her efforts, describing the Markeyverse as a political force that solidified Markey's image as a left-wing icon.
However, six years later, Walsh's trajectory has taken a dark turn. Now 21 and residing in Beirut, she has become a vocal anti-American and pro-Palestine activist, frequently appearing on Iranian media platforms. In July 2025, she was captured on camera chanting 'Death to America' and 'Death to Israel' at a memorial event in Tehran, where she thanked Iran for hosting her and urged attendees to join the 'struggle against Zionism and imperialism.
' Her radicalization has been further evidenced by her social media posts, including one in March where she celebrated the deaths of four US soldiers, calling them fascists and genocidal. When news broke of the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Walsh referred to him as the 'leader of the free world' and called for a global uprising to avenge his death.
Her legal troubles have also escalated; in 2024, she was sentenced to 60 days in jail for protesting outside Elbit Systems, Israel's largest defense contractor, but served only a month. Reports suggest she is now on a US government watchlist. Walsh's parents have distanced themselves from her political views, expressing love for her while emphasizing their focus on her cause of ending war and oppression.
Meanwhile, Joe Caiazzo, a former adviser to Kennedy, criticized the media's role in elevating Walsh at such a young age, suggesting that the pressure contributed to her radicalization
