) - Medical marijuana will be available in Alabama within days, according to officials from dispensaries and clinics planning to open across the state. Vince Schillaci, owner of Calli’s Apothecary, said he his is hoping to open the Montgomery location the week of May 11, making it the first dispensary in Alabama.
“Mid-May, I think, is the latest. You know, I don’t have the exact date, but we’re really hoping for that week of May 11th,” Schillaci said.
“I do think we’re at a point now where, at least from what I call the downstream licensees, the processers, the cultivators, and the dispensaries, the lawsuits are behind us, and we’re ready to get the product to the patients,” he said. Before patients can purchase medical marijuana, they must obtain a medical marijuana card. Chanel Rousseau, director of Green Remedy, said the clinic helps patients get their medical marijuana cards and will open in Montgomery soon.
A Huntsville location is planned for June. Rousseau said the qualifying conditions include PTSD, panic disorder, depression, autism, cancer, Crohn’s disease, HIV and chronic pain.
“Traditional medicine has helped and it has done tremendous things for people, but it’s not a one size fits all like Band-Aid. Like people need different options. The residents of Alabama need to be able to have a little bit more control and a little bit more say in how they medicate. And this is a fantastic way for them to do that,” she said.
“I think it’s important for patients also here that this is a healthcare program, healthcare program for them. So, there’s no, you know, no combustible product available,” he said. Smoking medical marijuana remains illegal in Alabama. Patients will only be able to purchase it in oils, topicals, caplets and gel caps.
