Ten years ago, the Texas attorney general sued Alejandra Driskell for providing immigration services even though she wasn’t a lawyer. She’s still in business.
In early May, a 29-year-old asylum-seeker named Jimson was transferred from the U.S.-Mexico border to a detention center in Colorado and told he soon would have to go before an immigration judge. Jimson needed a lawyer, so he reached out to a San Antonio woman who had been recommended by an acquaintance back home in Ecuador .
Woman trolled immigration centers illegally for clients Jimson, Ginger and the sister's godmother all say Driskell told them separately that she is an attorney. Driskell is not an attorney. In fact, as part of a civil settlement with the Texas Attorney General’s Office in 2016, she was barred from ever again “providing immigration services” or representing herself as an attorney.
