Israeli archaeologists have made a remarkable discovery in the Judean Desert , unearthing ancient gold artifacts at a former Christian monastery. The announcement, made this month by Israel's Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), highlights the enduring historical significance of the region and the preservation efforts underway to protect its heritage.
The discovery, which includes two gold coins and a delicate gold ring, provides valuable insights into the religious and monastic life that flourished in the area during the Byzantine era. The unearthed treasures offer a tangible connection to the past, allowing researchers and the public alike to appreciate the richness and complexity of the region's history.\The Hyrcania archaeological site, located in the northern Judean Desert approximately ten miles east of Jerusalem in the West Bank, is where the significant find was made. This area, known for its vulnerability to antiquities looting, has miraculously preserved these precious artifacts for over 1,400 years. The site's history dates back to the late Hellenistic period, between the second and first centuries BC, when it served as a fortress. Later, during the Byzantine period, the site transformed into a Christian monastery, reflecting the growth of Judean Desert monasticism. The agency's press release noted that the monastery's establishment is attributed to Saint Sabbas, a key figure in the founding of desert monasticism. The gold coins, solidi, bear the image of Heraclius, the Byzantine Emperor who ruled from 610 to 641 AD.
