Largest US uranium discovery in decade begins production with 6-million-pound resource

Uranium Energy Corporation has begun production at Hollow Burke, the largest uranium reserve in the US, with over 6 million pounds of uranium oxide

Uranium production has begun at Burke Hollow , the largest uranium in-situ recovery site in the United States, in the past decade. The estimated resource from the project, located on a 20,000-acre site, is currently 6,155,000 pounds of U3O8, the most stable form of uranium oxide .

With increased demand for clean energy, the focus is slowly shifting back to nuclear fission power plants, which can generate large amounts of electricity on demand but without any carbon emissions. Powering these plants needs a stable supply of uranium fuel, which is largely supplied by Kazakhstan to the world. The US does not feature in the top three producers of uranium fuel in the world, but to ensure energy security, it needs to build facilities to extract uranium from the reserves at its disposal.Burke Hollow, the largest ISR uranium discovery in the US over the past decade, has long-term potential, with only half of the property explored to date and reserves of over 6 million pounds of uranium. In situ recovery of uraniumThe Uranium Energy Corporation is working on in-situ recovery operations at Hollow Burke. Also known as in-situ leaching, the method involves dissolving uranium in wells and then recovering it. In this process, the ground is fortified with a complexing agent and often with an oxidant . The fortified water is then introduced into an orebody to dissolve uranium from the sandstone host, which is then recovered and processed into yellowcake. Production at the Hollow Burke site has begun after the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality gave its final approvals, which took over a decade of exploring, permitting, and development at the site. The UEC’s South Texas team will now focus on ramping up operations and constructing more wellfields across the project. More uranium to comeIn addition to Burke Hollow, UEC has another site in Wyoming where it carries out ISR work. The company operates on a hub-and-spoke model, with the Hobson Central Processing Plant serving as the hub. With uranium feedstock coming from its spoke sites, UEC’s central facility is expected to produce 4 million pounds of uranium each year. “UEC’s recent production achievements in Texas and Wyoming highlight the importance of uranium production as the foundation of a secure, domestic nuclear fuel cycle,” said Chris Wright, US Energy Secretary.“As we continue rebuilding the full fuel cycle, including key downstream infrastructure, this progress shows we can build it here and lead from here.”“With two ISR operations now producing, and our Ludeman ISR project planned for startup in 2027, we are building a scalable, multi-faceted platform supported by the largest uranium resource base in the United States,” said Amir Adnani, President and CEO of UEC, in a press release. With roughly half of the Burke Hollow site still unexplored, UEC estimates another 4,883,000 pounds of U3O8 in inferred resources, making it the largest uranium resource base in the US. Additionally, the company is also pursuing domestic refining and conversion facilities in the US through its subsidiary, United States Uranium Refining & Conversion Corp. UEC also has a large land and resource portfolio in Canada’s Athabasca Basin. “Our 100% unhedged, staged production growth strategy positions UEC to meet strengthening market fundamentals and growing U.S. policy support for the domestic nuclear fuel supply chain,” added Adnani in the press release.
