Anthony Duffey, the owner of Sunnyside Bed and Breakfast in Southport, Merseyside, shares how his business has evolved over the last 18 years. The guesthouse, which was awarded gold in Visit England's B&B and Guest House of the Year category in 2025, has undergone changes to provide guests with a more comfortable and personalized stay. Anthony and Larissa Duffey, the husband-and-wife team, work hard to ensure that every detail of their guests' stay is considered, from locally sourced breakfast ingredients to small 'personal touches' in the bedrooms. They also make their own honey and jams, using fruit from a nearby farm, and even the walls are decorated with work from local artists. The hospitality industry faces a range of pressures, but Anthony and Larissa work hard to keep the costs down when running an award-winning bed and breakfast. They put in long hours and occasionally work around 80 hours a week. Helping guests create memories in Southport during their stay makes all the hard work and long hours worthwhile for Anthony.

Anthony Duffey started his first B&B business 20 years ago in Stockport. Sunnyside Bed and Breakfast, owned by Anthony and Larissa Duffey, scooped two accolades in VisitEngland's 2025 tourism awards, including Best B&B in England, and a second commendation for Ethical , Responsible and Sustainable Tourism.

The UK is primed for a bumper staycation summer, with holiday companies reporting 'similar patterns' to the pandemic because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Sunnyside owner Anthony shares how his business has changed since he first opened it with his mother nearly two decades ago. The couple make their own honey and jams, using fruit from a nearby farm, and even the walls are decorated with work from local artists.

They pay attention to the finer details, from ensuring they have locally sourced breakfast ingredients to the small 'personal touches' in the bedrooms. Anthony emphasizes that 'it's not just about the kind of the room and kind of the fixtures and fittings in the room,' but the 'whole experience of their stay.
