A Brooklyn police sergeant who struck a man’s car – then left the scene of the accident – has now been disciplined. That officer was also accused of assaulting the driver, and the incident was all caught on camera.

BROOKLYN, Ohio - A Brooklyn police sergeant who struck a man’s car – then left the scene of the accident – has now been disciplined. He says that’s when a black Chevy Silverado swiped his Kia Sportage and raced away at speeds topping 100 miles an hour.

At the time, Wyckoff says he had no idea the truck’s driver was Brooklyn Police Sergeant Paul Stein, who was on his way to work. Seconds after the crash, Wyckoff grabbed his cellphone and began recording as the truck sped away — apparently trying to evade him. Wyckoff kept recording as Stein’s truck drove erratically — cutting off vehicles on the freeway — exiting the highway — barreling through red lights — recklessly racing through Rocky River’s residential streets.19 Investigates obtained a recording of their phone call.“He claims I hit him; I never felt an impact,” said Stein.“Oh yeah, I was trying to get away from him because he was driving like a bat out of hell,” Stein replied. Stein told detectives he fled because he “felt his life was in jeopardy” and wasn’t even aware that his truck had struck the vehicle. Police photos of the crash show noticeable damage to the front bumper of Wyckoff’s Kia and the rear bumper of Stein’s Silverado. When Westlake police completed their investigation, they determined Stein was at-fault for pulling in front of Wyckoff’s car. Hansbrough has been in practice for 25 years and specializes in police misconduct and excessive use of force cases. Hansbrough says Stein should know that officers are on-duty 24/7, especially since he’s been with the Brooklyn Police Department for the past 18 years. He questions why Stein fled Wyckoff in the first place, racing away at such a high rate of speed, especially if he hadn’t done anything wrong. Wyckoff eventually followed Stein into the department’s gated parking lot, still unaware the truck was being driven by a cop. Surveillance cameras captured Wyckoff confronting the off-duty, plain-clothes officer outside the employee entrance.Regarding the traffic incident, he determined Stein violated three of the department’s Standards of Conduct:Conduct unbecoming an officer, reflecting unfavorably upon the department. On June 16, Chief Mielke conducted a pre-disciplinary hearing with Stein and his union rep from the Ohio Patrolman’s Benevolent Association. In the Discipline Agreement, Stein admitted he violated the department’s “standards of conduct”. However, it states he “is not acknowledging responsibility for any civil actions related to off-duty conduct but is only agreeing that Employer has sufficient grounds to issue discipline”. The agreement goes on to state if Stein has any future traffic violations in the “next two years”, he could face a “three-day unpaid suspension”.“The complete lack of disciplinary action for the assault on Mr. Wykoff shows the encounter was not an isolated incident by a rogue police officer violating a citizen’s civil rights, but rather further evidence of a pattern of systematic deficiencies within the Brooklyn Police Department itself.” 19 Investigates reached out to Sgt. Stein, Chief Scott Mielke, OPBA’s Chief Legal Counsel Daniel Leffler and the City of Brooklyn’s Law Director Kevin Butler for comment but hasn’t heard back.Police: Brooklyn sergeant accused of hitting car, assaulting driver violated department policiesMansfield man gets body-slammed by cop after jaywalking, fractures seven ribsFamily sues Cleveland Heights officers involved in teen’s shooting death4 juveniles arrested after crashing into home during police chase in Garfield Heights
