GRAND RIVER, Ohio - The Coast Guard announced on Monday an updated ice removal plan for the Grand River , including a limited ice breaking approach along the waterway. According to a press release, the ice breaking procedure will only extend as far as the Morton Salt Dock .
“The Coast Guard ice breaker has an ice depth that it can operate in,” Eacho said. “That water depth in the Grand River is shallower than that depth.” The statement goes on to say the adjustment is a necessary precaution to ensure the safety of Coast Guard personnel and assets. The Coast Guard has not started their ice-breaking procedure yet, as its still closely monitoring the river’s ice sheet. “It’s all dependent on the weather, and if the weather creates a situation where we see an ice jam,” Eacho said. The U.S. Coast Guard has equipment available every year to break up ice dams along the Grand River in order to prevent floods.Over the years, he’s witnessed the transformation of the Grand River from solid ice to large chunks as temperatures rise.Freeman was informed of the Coast Guard’s updated ice plan during his Monday interview with 19 News.The Coast Guard is encouraging anyone with questions concerning operations above the Morton Salt Docks to contact Lake County Emergency Management at 440-350-5499, the Fairport Harbor Fire Department at 440-352-6822, or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at 716-879-4160.“It’ll probably be a little extreme this year, but we usually get through anything that is thrown our way down here,” he said.
