The 42nd running of the Gold Nugget Triathlon saw a significant increase in participants compared to previous years, with about 400 to 300 women turning out in the first year and over 1,700 women participating this year.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The 42nd running of the Gold Nugget Triathlon saw about 1,700 women turn out at Bartlett High School Sunday.

“We probably had about 400 to 300 that first year here at Bartlett,” the 81-year-old recalled of a few years into the race, before gesturing to a parking lot filled with bikes behind her Sunday. “This year, you can see what we have. ” All the participants aimed to tackle a 400-yard swim, 12.1-mile bike, and 3.25-mile run to the finish line at nearby Pena Park.

Finishers comprised a wide age range, with age groups starting at 10 years old going all the way up to 85+, and hailed from fifteen different states and one Canadian province.

“I think as you look around, you can see it’s all sizes, all ages, and everybody once you cross that finish line, you’re a triathlete,” Barnett said. “And that means a lot. ” Barnett competed in a three-person team alongside her daughter-in-law Francisca and granddaughter Rylee, who all completed the race for the fourth time as a trio.

“Just do it,” Francisca Barnett recommended. “It’s so awesome. I’m so proud of G-Ma and my daughter, and it really means a lot.
