Good Omens season 3, originally planned to be six episodes long, is now a single 90-minute episode. The season introduces new events and characters, while some, like Shax, are left behind.
Warning: spoilers for Good Omens season 3 . Good Omens sees one final religious event with the Second Coming , which once more brings Heaven and Hell together, but there’s one big absence in the latter, as Miranda Richardson’s Shax doesn’t appear in season 3 .
After the cliffhanger ending of season 2, Prime Video’s Good Omens is back with its final season, but with a twist. The final season of Good Omens is just one 90-minute-long episode, and it reunites viewers with Crowley and Aziraphale . While Crowley retired as a demon and has been living in an alley, Aziraphale has been planning the Second Coming, but it’s complicated when Jesus escapes from Heaven.
As a result, Heaven and Hell are going after Jesus, and so Crowley and Aziraphale team up one more time. Thanks to this, Good Omens season 3 brings the archangels and demons back, but Shax is nowhere to be seen. Good Omens season 3 ends up changing its focus from finding Jesus to finding out why the archangels are disappearing and who took the Book of Life and why.
These events, which ultimately lead to a major twist, leave Hell and its demons behind, but the big question remains about Shax’s very notable absence, especially after she was given a higher role in Hell in season 2. Despite Her New Role In Hell, Shax Doesn’t Appear In Good Omens Season 3 After Crowley was labeled a traitor at the end of season 1, he was replaced by Shax as Hell’s representative on Earth.
Shax made her debut in season 2, where, after learning that Aziraphale and Crowley had been helping and hiding archangel Gabriel , she unleashed an army of demons who attacked Aziraphale’s bookshop. At the end of Good Omens season 2, Shax was present when Gabriel and Beelzebub’s relationship was revealed. At Crowley’s suggestion, Gabriel and Beelzebub moved to Alpha Centauri to be together, and thus both quit their roles in Heaven and Hell.
This left two spots open, with Aziraphale taking Gabriel’s role in Heaven and Shax taking Beelzebub’s in Hell. This means that Shax became the new Duke of Hell, thus being the new authority figure in Hell. Because of this, it’s hard to ignore Shax’s absence in Good Omens season 3.
With Hell looking for Jesus, it makes sense that Shax would have appeared, even briefly, but instead, season 3 left Hell’s duties to two other demons who felt more like comedic relief. There’s no mention of Shax in Good Omens season 3, and having been a main antagonist in season 2 and one of the highest powers in Hell , it leaves the question of where she was during the Second Coming and if she was still the Duke of Hell or was demoted at some point.
Good Omens Season 3’s Production Issues Might Have Led To Shax’s Absence At the time of writing, an official reason for Miranda Richardson’s absence in Good Omens season 3 hasn’t been revealed, but it’s widely assumed that the season’s production issues might have had to do with it. The original plan for Good Omens season 3 was for it to be six episodes long, but those plans changed after the sexual assault accusations against Neil Gaiman.

Gaiman left the show while Amazon held crisis talks, and it was ultimately revealed that season 3 of Good Omens would be a single 90-minute episode. This, of course, led to the story being revisited and changed, and with less time available and a lot to cover, some characters surely had to be left behind.
Hell and the demons had a much smaller presence in season 3, and probably bringing Shax back for just a couple of minutes wouldn’t have been fair. Good Omens season 3 isn’t a perfect episode, though Crowley and Aziraphale’s ending is, but the show had to make some sacrifices to fit the format of the finale.
