The Alabama Department of Transportation held a public meeting to present a proposed redesign of the Boll Weevil Circle corridor, citing crash numbers as the reason for the project. The project would stretch along U.S. 84 from Rucker Boulevard to Coppinville Road, passing Walmart, Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s, Starbucks, and Sam Boswell Honda.

ENTERPRISE, Ala. - The Alabama Department of Transportation held a public meeting to present a proposed redesign of the Boll Weevil Circle corridor, citing crash numbers as the reason for the project.

The project would stretch along U.S. 84 from Rucker Boulevard to Coppinville Road. That corridor passes Walmart, Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s, Starbucks and Sam Boswell Honda.

“While reviewing this particular one, we did notice there was a higher crash rate. And so we went back and looked, and these conflict points that we’re trying to reduce were the causes of many of the crashes that we were seeing through this area,” Kirk said. The plan would add concrete medians down the center of the corridor, modify access to the service roads running alongside it and install what are called “reduced conflict intersections.

” Those intersections would limit certain left turns and redirect traffic flow. Not everyone who attended the meeting left feeling reassured.

“After seeing this, I think it’s going to cause a lot of chaos. And it’s going to make coming out of businesses a lot more difficult,” said Jazmyn, an Enterprise resident. That concern was shared by business owners along the corridor, including Kevin Crisler, owner and operator of the Chick-fil-A in the middle of the project zone.

“There’s always something going on in front of our restaurant, unfortunately. But I think to increase and make the traffic flow a little bit more efficient, as well as the safety component, would be the best thing for the community,” Crisler said. Crisler said the concern is not hypothetical. When a similar ALDOT project redesigned Dothan’s Ross Clark Circle, restaurants along that corridor closed, citing the construction as the reason.

“There are some similarities and where a lot of the concerns come in, just in terms of how stores were affected during and after construction. It doesn’t look like it’s apples to apples, but there are just, again, some concerns with some other business owners outside of us at Chick-fil-A,” Crisler said.

“It may add a few extra seconds, but those few extra seconds could save a life,” Kirk said. Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published. Available for FREE in theD. A. asked if he’ll pursue death in Genesis murder case.
