The five-star piece of fashion buys. Clue: it‘s a blazer.
Second clue: it‘s very similar to the boucle jackets by the new designer at Chanel, Matthieu Blazy, the man who is currently the most worshipped in fashion circles. Every so often a fashion item comes along that polishes up and modernises the clothes we already own. That‘s always nice and saves a lot of effort.
Then, less frequently, that thing is a fashion lifesaver. It works, it‘s familiar yet different, you look good in it, you know you‘ll wear it a lot and the bullseye – it makes you feel like you‘re in the white-hot zone alongside the very stylish not paddling in the warm safe shallows.
Zara Collection check fringed jacket £149 Shop This jacket – one of a few Zara blazers in the Blazy mould – boxy, boucle, black and white windowpane check, shaggy fringe-trimmed, fitted on the shoulders and arms - is all of the above and more. We all err on the side of minimal and easy to blend in these days, not least because we can‘t afford to buy clothes that don‘t work hard, which means we often miss out on that fizzy, head-turning element of fashion which keeps us youthful and standing out from the crowd.
With a Chanel-channelling Zara blazer, or one like it, you get a versatile piece of clothing that‘s super convenient and at the same time fabulously fashionable . And if you‘re thinking ‘Well yes, but a tweedy jacket… in May?
‘ this jacket is a light polyester mix, so you can wear over a shirt, sleeveless top or T-shirt in warmish weather, even if you have to put it down for a few weeks in August, before taking it up again in September. The downsides are you need to try it on in store – I needed a different size in all three of the most Blazy-esque jackets – and it‘s not cheap .
But the real deals cost in the region of £10,000 and you‘ll get enough wear out of this in the next few months to make it pay. Added to this I can confirm – having bought mine last Tuesday – that it makes you up your game. Mine has got me slipping on an old, once loved cocktail ring, reaching for the crisper jeans with the ironed seam down the front and swapping loafers for a little block heel.
In the evening you can keep the jacket buttoned up and it acts like a fluffy Elizabethan collar concealing an untucked neck while looking feathery and a bit Roaring Twenties decadent. Mango 100% silk blouse £99.99 Shop A sleek silk tie blouse underneath would work equally well too, try Mango‘s . On the bottom I‘ve worn starchy flares, off-white jeans, and a dark blue skirt.
It would look great with leather, elegant over a midi black dress with white shoes and chic with a similarly textured below-the-knee skirt and boots come the autumn. It would be a shame to wear it with plain black trousers , but the whole point is you can use the Blazy look blazer any way you want to. Black and white check is not to everyone‘s taste, so Zara has come up with other options.
Zara ZW Collection textured check jacket £109 Shop Zara Tailored Blazer with Gold Buttons £59.99 Shop Aligne Daphne Waisted Blazer £175 Shop Stella McCartney H&M Double-Breasted Wool Blazer £259.99 Shop There‘s a smart cropped boucle double breasted jacket in a red, white and black check, with the essential fuzzy fringing , ideal for those who are less tall and like a bold neat top. More casual is the bright yellow, black and white check boucle jacket ; this one is zipped up and fringe-seamed with a more shacket feel.
And the plainest option is a navy blazer with off-centre buttoning and a stand-up collar . Zara are blazing the Blazy trail but the rest of the high street is not far behind in the rush to provide elevating quality jackets.
Elsewhere you can find Aligne‘s collarless, long waisted blazer in several colours – a useful shape that works with trousers and skirts – or, as of last week, H&M has strong shouldered sharp blazers designed by Stella McCartney . The message now is aim for something more interesting than your straight navy blazer. Think big, think bold, and maybe until further notice, think Blazy.
