BlackSea Technologies unveils missile-armed Comet drone boat built for air defense and strike missions at Sea-Air-Space exposition.

Baltimore-based BlackSea Technologies unveiled its heavily armed Comet unmanned surface vessel during the Sea-Air-Space exposition near Washington, D.C., on Sunday, showcasing a combat-ready platform designed for both air defense and maritime strike roles.

The vessel’s appearance in an operational configuration, complete with visible missile systems, marked one of the most aggressive public displays of an uncrewed naval system by a U.S. manufacturer.Armed drone boat takes center stageDisplayed at Dock D2, Comet stood out for its visible weapon systems and compact, low-profile design. Images from the event show a hexagonal-patterned hull equipped with a dual-rail missile launcher and a forward-mounted electro-optical targeting system. Additional onboard systems include navigation radar and multiple sensors for situational awareness. The missile launcher appeared to carry ready-to-fire interceptors configured for air defense. Combined with infrared and optical targeting, the vessel is clearly designed to engage aerial threats such as drones, helicopters, and low-flying aircraft. This setup highlights a growing shift toward uncrewed platforms capable of defending naval assets without exposing sailors to danger.Fast build with proven design rootsComet measures about 43 feet in length with a beam of roughly 9 feet 7 inches. It is built on an aluminum semi-planing hull designed for high-speed operations, exceeding 45 knots. According to the company, the vessel was constructed in just one month.“Built in just one month, Comet is the latest evolution of a hull design with over two decades of operational history in the U.S. Navy,” BlackSea stated. “The same modular, mission-configurable concept first delivered in the early 2000s now runs at 45+ knots with a 10,000 lb payload capacity, ready for MCM, EW, ASW, and beyond.”Twin Volvo D6 engines power the vessel, while a Seakeeper stabilization system ensures smoother performance at high speeds. The company emphasized that the hull is fully built in the United States and is designed to be durable and repairable in operational conditions.Range, payload, and mission flexibilityThe platform offers a total payload capacity of 10,000 pounds, including fuel. In a lighter configuration carrying about 3,000 pounds, Comet can travel up to 1,000 nautical miles at speeds near 40 knots in moderate sea conditions. When loaded with heavier payloads of around 7,500 pounds, it can cover 500 nautical miles at 20 knots. Its modular design allows operators to quickly switch between mission types. The vessel can support mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare, electronic warfare, and maritime surveillance. It can also be configured for escort missions, protecting larger ships or high-value targets. The firm designed the forward and aft sections to accept different payload modules without major structural changes. This approach allows rapid upgrades or reconfiguration depending on operational needs, making the platform adaptable for evolving naval requirements.Shift toward combat-ready autonomyComet is equipped with an advanced autonomy system that supports navigation, remote control, and scalable command structures. This enables the vessel to operate independently or as part of a larger network of naval assets. The company said the vessel’s name reflects its design philosophy. “Named for a Baltimore privateer, Comet is built on a simple principle: move fast and carry more.” The reference highlights a focus on speed, payload efficiency, and independent operation.By displaying the vessel with active weapon systems instead of a stripped-down prototype, BlackSea signaled a clear intent to position Comet as an operational asset. The Sea-Air-Space exposition, known for attracting senior military officials and procurement leaders, provided a high-visibility platform for that message. The combination of speed, heavy payload, and integrated weapons suggests that unmanned vessels like Comet are moving beyond experimental roles. They are increasingly being designed for frontline missions where autonomy and survivability are critical.
