A Dothan resident said the murals carry a message that extends beyond a single month.

DOTHAN, Ala. - As Black History Month draws to a close, murals across Dothan serve as a year-round reminder of the history that has shaped the present. The murals depict figures including Ray Charles , the Tuskegee Airmen , George Washington Carver , and scenes from Juneteenth celebrations.

Among them is a tribute to a local figure known as Dancin’ Dave — a Dothan resident who never owned a car, walked everywhere he went, and stopped to dance for anyone he encountered. His likeness now appears on a wall in the city.“This is not black history. This is American history,” Kage said. “Make time to visit them instead of just driving by, looking at them, and just keep on going. Research. Find out what they’re about. And the impact that has been made needs to be taught year-round, not just in February.”Coverage will be available at news4now.live Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published.
