After a limited clinical trial, the research team hopes to perform a yearlong study to better test the findings.

An antiviral medicine used to treat HIV and hepatitis B also shows promise in controlling some of the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, according to a pilot study led by UT Health San Antonio. Resarchers were surprised to find that the drug, called lamivudine, generated “significant improvement” in a limited clinical trial for people experiencing mild cognitive changes.

Campbell Sullivan, the study’s co-principal investigator and clinical associate professor in the department of neurology at the Biggs Institute, said there are “many promising trials coming out” related to Alzheimer’s. “Disease-modifying treatments for dementia are limited and can have worrisome side effects. Our results show that treatment with lamivudine was safe and suggest a beneficial effect for those with early Alzheimer’s disease,” she said.
