DOTHAN, Ala. - People who grew up during the ’60s and ’70s in south Alabama knew the coolest radio station was WBAM, the Big Bam in Montgomery. Among the coolest disc jockeys was Bill J. Moody , who would spin our favorites — Paul Revere and the Raiders, the Beatles, Herman’s Hermits and Tommy James and the Shondells.
Listeners would stop by the Big Bam studios on Troy Highway and gaze through the glass window, marveling at the talent, including Bill J. Moody. By the ’70s, AM radio began its decline, and Bill moved on, enjoying success on the business side of broadcasting as he had on the personality side. Bill, in his 80s, will finally receive recognition that is long overdue. He will be inducted into the Alabama Broadcasting Hall of Fame. Veteran radio personality and longtime community leader Bill J. Moody will be inducted into the Alabama Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame on April 24, 2026.Moody, a native of Wetumpka, began his career in radio as a teenager at WETU, where he worked behind the scenes before earning an on-air role while still in high school. His amazing talent soon landed him in Montgomery. He helped organize legendary Big Bam Shows at Garrett Coliseum. He eventually stepped away from the microphone, shifting to the business side of the business. He joined the Radio People in Dothan as sales manager and became an integral contributor professionally and personally to the area. According to a Digio Strategies statement, Moody and his wife, Cathie, built a family that includes two sons, Joe and Scott, along with grandchildren. He served in the National Guard. His introduction into the Alabama Broadcasting Hall of Fame is set for April 24 at the Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery.
