The route connecting Moscone Center and Union Square, a popular path for countless San Francisco visitors, is set for an upgrade. A coalition of neighborhood advocates and city officials believe the route needs improvement to be more inviting, inspiring, and safe.

The Yerba Buena Partnership, a community benefit district in downtown San Francisco, has selected the landscape-architecture and urban-design firm Bionic to develop conceptual designs for enhancing the pedestrian experience along this well-traveled corridor. The route spans Fourth Street from Howard Street to Market Street, then continues along Stockton Street to Geary Street.Funding for the design effort comes from a $150,000 grant from the City of San Francisco, with future improvements requiring additional funding, according to Scott Rowitz, the Yerba Buena Partnership's executive director. Rowitz emphasized the importance of this pedestrian path, stating, 'We know that this is one of the natural pedestrian paths that our visitors to San Francisco see, and we have a great opportunity to reinvent and reinvest in it. It's amazing what the data shows of how much physical traffic there really is, foot traffic.' Possible upgrades include enhanced landscaping, experiential and directional signage. However, Rowitz stressed that a community outreach process will take place before any specific design approaches are finalized. The Yerba Buena Partnership is leading this initiative in collaboration with the Union Square Alliance, another improvement district, as well as San Francisco's Office of Economic & Workforce Development, the Convention Facilities Department, and the City Administrator's office, which oversees the City-owned Moscone Center. This project highlights the city's commitment to revitalizing its tourism economy, with Mayor Daniel Lurie and other city officials expressing their support. Mayor Lurie stated, 'San Francisco's comeback starts downtown. And through this project, we are coming together across city government with the private sector to create exciting opportunities for residents and visitors to experience downtown again. I am excited to work with this group to reimagine this important corridor and continue to drive our city's revitalization.'The Yerba Buena district, along with Union Square, hosts half of the city's hotel rooms, as well as over 3.5 million square feet of retail space. The area boasts museums, galleries, theaters, and performance venues. The Yerba Buena Partnership, responsible for providing cleaning, safety, and marketing services within the area roughly bounded by Second Street, Fifth Street, Market Street to Perry Street, includes the city's convention and exhibition facilities, Yerba Buena Gardens, and the highest concentration of museums in the city. These museums include the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Museum of the African Diaspora, and the Children's Creativity Museum. Rowitz envisions 'rolling out the red carpet for visitors and residents' by creating 'an iconic and vibrant public realm to attract visitors, and support businesses, arts and cultural organizations.' Marcel Wilson, Bionic's founding principal, believes there are numerous ways to enhance the pedestrian experience on this route, ranging from simple improvements like better signage and lighting to more complex interventions such as widening sidewalks. Bionic will collaborate with RSM Design, specialists in branding and wayfinding in retail and urban environments. Wilson expressed confidence that 'this project has the potential to change the narrative about people visiting San Francisco.
