After years of talk, Elon Musk's SpaceX has filed a letter with Cameron County requesting an election to consider incorporation of Starbase.
After years of chatter about renaming its company town on the Gulf Coast , Elon Musk ’s SpaceX is requesting a county election to consider incorporation of its Starbase development near Boca Chica Beach .
In a letter Thursday to Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr., Starbase General Manager Kathryn Lueders requested the election to “determine whether Starbase, Texas, should be incorporated as a city.” READ MORE: Here’s who’s blocking Elon Musk’s bid to rename land around SpaceX in South Texas as Starbase She wrote that “to continue growing the workforce necessary to rapidly develop and manufacture Starship, we need the ability to grow Starbase as a community.” Incorporating Starbase would streamline reviews and processes to build amenities for “the hundreds already calling it home, as well as for prospective workers eager to help build humanity’s future in space,” Lueders said. In a statement, SpaceX said the petition was from “residents of Starbase.” A Cameron County official said the county will review the request. Musk has been trying to make the Starbase name official since at least March 2021. Now, SpaceX is in the process of moving its corporate headquarters to Starbase from Hawthorne, Calif. Lueders noted that because of the remote location, the company is providing civil functions such as managing roads and utilities, schooling and medical care. “Incorporation would move the management of some of these functions to a more appropriate public body,” she wrote. It’s just the company’s latest effort to make Starbase official. Earlier this year, Cameron County applied to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to officially rename the swath of coastal land that’s listed on federal records as Kopernik Shores. However, federal guidelines say the office won’t consider proposals “connected with a commercial product or enterprise.” READ MORE: South Texas judge denies environmental group’s request to halt SpaceX Starship launches “The BGN’s staff has sniffed out that the sole purpose of our name change is for the benefit of SpaceX,” county attorney Daniel Lopez wrote in a June 6 email to colleagues in his office and the county administrator’s office. “We need to respond with some reason that this is not for SpaceX.” The snag has left the renaming effort in limbo as the agency along with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Texas Geographic Names Committee continues their review. They aren’t expected to have an answer until sometime next year. Incorporating Starbase could be a workaround to the renaming holdup.
