While days on the farm haven’t always been easy, Corbin’s resilience to provide quality, organic products has remained.
BRUNDIDGE, Ala. - Just feet from Highway 231 in Pike County, Crossroads Farms stands as a family business that Beverly Elaine Corbin has kept alive since her grandfather established it. “My daddy, he liked to grow a garden for friends and family.
And so I’m just trying to keep that going, keep that tradition going,” Corbin said. Corbin grew up on the homestead, learning how to cultivate before becoming an X-ray technician. After retiring, she decided it was time to get her hands dirty again. “It just made sense to get back into growing and doing produce and taking advantage of what we have here on the property,” she said. But that advantage was cut short last year when a hailstorm ravaged the farm’s greenhouses and gardens, halting production. However, that didn’t stop her for long. Now, with the help of her neighbor, Crossroads Farms is working toward a season of improvement. Along with caring for her assortment of livestock and preparing her gardens to host fruits and vegetables, Corbin is ready to plant in her newest greenhouse, which will utilize drip irrigation.“It’s a non-profit trying to get a farm-to-school program started, and hopefully that takes off. We’re looking forward to really getting started with GreenSky and being a part of their program, to be able to provide the school students with healthy lunches and healthy food,” she said. While days on the farm haven’t always been easy, Corbin’s resilience to provide quality, organic products has remained. Because she knows it’s not just a passion or tradition — it’s a duty. “It’s a noble profession. Because we feed everybody, the farmers feed people, and where would we be without the farmers? And so it makes me proud to be able to say that I am a grower,” she said. Corbin is committed to seeing Crossroads Farms grow as a bountiful source of fresh food for the surrounding community.Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published.
