A group of Freemasons share their experiences and the positive impact of their organization on their lives.
What do this lot have in common? Not much, at first glance. There’s a first response officer for the fire service, a scout leader, train driver, beekeeper, actress, chef, project manager, magician, private banker, electric vehicle salesman and, well, the list goes on and on.
They are also of all ages, all colours, all backgrounds and from all around the country. Men and women, gay and straight. Could they all share the same birthday, or belong to the same religious sect? Or perhaps they’ve all won the Lottery – they certainly look very happy.
No, sorry – none of the above. These 30 men and women are proud Freemasons – members of the ancient guild of stonemasons – pictured in the Grand Temple of the United Grand Lodge of England.
And, true to the shroud of secrecy that has been draped over the UK’s 170,000 Freemasons for the last 300-odd years, they still won’t reveal their elaborate behind-the-scenes rituals involving lambskin aprons, pristine white gloves, ropes, blindfolds and bare breasts; or their enthusiasm for symbols of ducks and stars and a single all-seeing eye, or even let slip the details of their special handshake. But they are very keen to share a few surprising details about their organisation.
Such as how Freemasonry, which is focused on moral improvement, charity and fellowship, has changed their lives and made them better people. How, for some of them, membership of their Lodge has cured loneliness, depression and, in one case, apparently, even dementia. And how their extraordinary sense of community and tireless charity work has made them better people – and better able to rise above the endless conspiracy theories about goats, corruption and the assassination of JFK.
Because perhaps the biggest surprise about Freemasons – as I have learned over the past couple of weeks – is that they are not weird, sinister, or even just rather grey and boring. No, it turns out that they are just like other people but, whisper it, probably a little nicer. And for the first time, they are happy to lift the veil and tell us a bit about what being a Freemason means to them
