A former baseball coach was arrested Monday and charged with sexually assaulting and raping a minor.
CUYAHOGA COUNTY , Ohio - A former baseball coach was arrested Monday and charged with sexually assaulting and raping a minor. According to the Sergeant Eric Taylor of the Parma Heights Police Department, a report of a sexual assault that previously occurred in the city was taken on April 27.
Initial information gathered by patrol officers was turned over to the Detective Bureau for additional investigation. According to court records from the Parma Municipal Court, Steven Smetana, of Chardon, allegedly communicated via text messages with a girl under the age of 13.
According to the criminal complaint, there were allegedly several other occasions where Smetana met with the girl at a nearby church, and drove her to a nearby park where she would perform oral sex on him. The work of the detectives led to an execution of a search warrant at Smetana’s home in Geauga County Monday, and Smetana was arrested, police said.
According to the Cardinal Local School District, Smetana was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017, and he was called an outstanding baseball player at Cardinal and attended Kent State University. Smetana even went on to pitch professionally for the Boston Red Sox organization before retiring in 2001.
According to records from the Berkshire Local School District, he was the head baseball coach in the 2009 season, but 19 News has reached out to the district for additional details on his employment. The case will be sent to the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court where additional charges may be added by a Grand Jury, Parma Heights Police said. 19 News is working to learn more information and has made additional call outs to the Parma Heights Police Department.
