An individual recounts their experience with a medium, TJ Higgs, who provided them with evidence of an afterlife and shared messages from deceased loved ones.
I’ve always been a sceptic but I have proof there is life after death.
‘I’m hearing the name Hugh and the word son. Hugh’s son? I can hear Swan Lake. I was watching a TV programme yesterday and there were ballerinas…’ Earlier, in my kitchen having her make-up done for our photographs, TJ (Tracy Jacqueline) Higgs, a medium here to give me a reading, had told me she could hear a piano.
Unbeknown to her, in my sitting room there is indeed a baby grand. But no one is playing it. And Oh. My.
God. My mother’s maiden name is Hewson and before she married she studied ballet. I rush to fetch a photo: my mum, who died aged 94 in 2014, taken before the war. She’s wearing a tutu, tights and pointe slippers, performing an arabesque.
I show the photo to TJ who doesn’t look in the least surprised. She says: ‘I’m hearing the name Gertrude. ’ She hears voices in her head and sometimes sees people gathered behind her subject. Gertrude?
It’s my mum’s middle name.
‘You didn’t have a clear goodbye with your mum … there might have been dementia? ’ she continues. My mum spent the last decade of her life bedridden, unable to speak.
‘She was old-fashioned. Not a shouty lady. Kind, graceful, simple, didn’t need a lot. ’ Medium TJ (Tracy Jacqueline) Higgs, left, told me she could hear a piano, writes Liz Jones My mum never raised her voice to her seven children, never bought clothes as she knitted, sewed, darned, and never wore make-up.
‘There are siblings with her on the other side. ’ Also correct: two sisters and two brothers.
‘One sister, she didn’t want to be here. She lost a child? ’ Yes, her son to leukaemia, after a long battle. He was 21.
Now, TJ promises me she hasn’t Googled me. But even if she had, she would not know my mum’s maiden and middle names. She then says there’s a Bert. (I haven’t asked her to contact anyone; we’re waiting to see who shows up or, as TJ says: ‘Family will come.
’) My dad was christened Bert but changed his name to Robert. She could not possibly know that.
‘I see a military man in uniform? ’ Dad fought the Nazis, later serving in East Africa. She says he is very handsome and my parents were very much in love. He was and they were: married during the Second World War, they still held hands in their 80s.
TJ says: ‘Your dad adores you. ’ This brings tears because as a child I don’t remember being hugged or praised. I was never told I was beautiful. She says he has watched me be destroyed: ‘He says it was through no fault of your own: you received bad advice.
’ I always tried to help others, while my former accountant charged me £3,000 a month to file my tax returns late. She says Dad has a list of things I think I did wrong and wants to cross them all out. TJ says I’m very like my mum: kind, generous, gentle. I tell her people assume generous people are soft; we aren’t.
