Beijing hosts the world’s first fully autonomous 3-on-3 robot soccer match, previewing the 2025 World Humanoid Robot Games.

Beijing is set to host an interesting sporting event this weekend, where the future of soccer takes center stage, and the players are all robots. The final showdown of the RoBoLeague World Robot Soccer League will take place on June 28 in the city’s Yizhuang Development Zone.

With no human intervention, these autonomous machines will compete in two 10-minute halves, marking what’s believed to be the first fully robotic 3-on-3 soccer game, according to Chinese media outlets. The event also serves as a preview for the upcoming World Humanoid Robot Games, with four Chinese teams advancing through earlier qualifiers to secure their place in the finals.Humanoid robot soccer showdownThe event pits four Chinese teams—from top institutions such as Tsinghua University and Beijing Information Science and Technology University—against each other in a test of agility, strategy, and endurance hosted entirely by artificial intelligence. Each team fields three players plus one substitute, with the contest divided into two 10‑minute halves and a 5‑minute intermission. During a match, the robots walk , run, kick, chase the ball, and make split‑second decisions—all without human controllers, according to Bastille Post Global .Key to their performance is a sophisticated sensory and vision system. Equipped with optical cameras and sensors, the robots detect the white ball up to 65 feet away with over 90 percent accuracy, and identify play elements like field lines, goals, teammates, and opponents, according to the New York Post .Developers—some from institutions like Tsinghua and companies like Booster Robotics—rely on deep reinforcement learning. This AI allows the robots to learn optimal behaviors via trial and error, enabling them to decide whether to pass, dribble, or shoot in real time.“The World Robot Soccer League will be the first test competition for the 2025 World Humanoid Robot Games… putting the participating robots’ endurance and agility to the test,” Dou Jing, event organizer, told China Central Television , as reported by the BGP.AI sports revolutionBeijing will host the 2025 World Humanoid Robot Sports Games from August 15 to 17, showcasing the world’s most advanced humanoid robots in a series of athletic and real-world challenges. Following the successful robot half-marathon in April, this will mark the capital’s second major humanoid sports event. The games will feature 11 humanoid sport events modeled on traditional human competitions, including track and field, gymnastics, soccer, and synchronized dancing. According to CCTV, events were designed collaboratively by sports professionals and robotics experts. The competition aims to test agility, coordination, and AI decision-making. Athletic events will measure speed and balance, while small-team soccer will assess robot teamwork. Scenario-based challenges will simulate real-world tasks in healthcare, hospitality, and logistics — such as drug sorting and concierge services — highlighting robots’ practical AI capabilities.Three additional events will showcase non-humanoid robots competing in basketball, table tennis, and badminton, adding entertainment to the program. The games will run alongside the 2025 World Robot Conference , which marks its 10th edition. According to Chen Ying of the Chinese Institute of Electronics, the WRC will feature over 200 companies and unveil nearly 100 new robotic products. Supported by 20 international organizations, the events underline China’s growing ambitions in robotics innovation.
