It’s been weeks since a hailstorm tore through parts of Northeast Ohio, and for some homeowners in Bedford Heights, the damage is still sitting overhead—literally.

What caused that “missile” damage was golf-ball-size hail. The bigger problem now is the cost of repairs. Honer said her State Farm insurance deductible to replace the roof is more than $4,000, and that total is before factoring in other damage to her property, including her car and other areas of her home. For Honer and others in the neighborhood, that price tag isn’t realistic on a fixed income, so they’re asking the city to step in.
He said impacted residents can apply for a county grant of up to $2,500, help that may cover part of a deductible, but not all of it.
“I think we have to up at least 80 to 90 that can qualify, but right now there is a financial assessment that has to take place,” Stevens said. How long that assessment will take is unclear, and when asked whether the city plans to create new opportunities for relief, Stevens said there isn’t a new program in place at this time.
“Hopefully they have insurance, but if that not acting properly we as a council can look at some other resources and what we can do to help—but we do not have that in place now,” Stevens said. For seniors like Honer, that leaves a gap between the damage they can see and the help they can actually afford, one they hope city leaders move quickly to close.
