Jay'l Diaz faces charges of assault and disorderly conduct following the brawl between players from Lorain High School and Rogers High School in Toledo. The fight started during the basketball game when players from both teams began throwing punches.According to a police report, Diaz ran toward an officer who was restraining a Rogers High student. The report says the student had no way to protect himself. Officers arrested Diaz and took him to Lorain County Jail, and more charges could follow once they review all the video. Lorain High’s head basketball coach released a statement calling it “an unfortunate 34-second moment.” “We did not meet our own expectations or live up to the high standard we set for ourselves,” the coach said.As the head coach of our boys basketball program at Lorain High School, I want to address the most recent concerns as they pertain to the incident in our last game. While my platform may be insignificant to some, my responsibility to our young men, their families & our community is extremely important to me. The unfortunate event that happened in our last game was just that, an unfortunate 34 second moment that overshadowed so many positives. Lost in this were some amazing people whose actions prevented things from escalating. Our program is built on multiple core values, and in that short time, we did not meet our own expectations or live up to the high standard we set for ourselves. This incident also reflects a broader challenge facing our youth & community today. While our student athletes are rightly held to higher standards, growth requires support, understanding, & accountability, not constant criticism from those who tend to be disconnected from certain realities our young people face. We proudly represent a community rich in tradition, & we strive daily to honor those who came before us by being better than we were the day before. This message is not intended to be political. It is a request for grace from those whose support matters most. We recognize that emotions briefly got the best of us. We accept the consequences, & are committed to responding with No excuses. We acknowledge that which was wrong & will fight in the correct way to make it right. As a program, we will continue to learn & grow, on & off the court because that ultimately is our purpose. This is bigger than basketball, & I hope this moment reminds us all of our shared responsibility to uplift our young people & each other despite our shortcomings or differences of opinion.
