) - Grief is hard at any age, but it can be especially difficult for children who may not have the words, support, or coping skills to process a loss. For nearly two decades, Baptist Hospice has hosted Camp Celebration, a daylong camp designed to help children work through grief while connecting with other kids who understand what they’re going through.

“If a child doesn’t deal with their grief now, it shows up all stages of life,” said Mona McDermott, Camp Celebration’s director. McDermott said the goal is to remind kids they are not alone and to give them space to talk about the person they miss while still having fun. “Our goal is to help them know that there are other kids in the same situation or similar situations, and that they can have a fun day, and they can make things to remember their loved ones by,” McDermott said. Children moved through different stations with hands-on activities centered on remembrance. As they worked on crafts, staff and volunteers encouraged conversation about the person each child was honoring. “Who are you making this in memory of? Tell me a little bit about what you enjoy doing with them. What was your favorite thing about them?” McDermott said. “Just allowing them while they have those activities and while they do their crafts to talk about their loved one, that just brings some of the grief out where they feel like they’re able to talk about them and remember their loved ones.” Organizers said the pain of losing someone doesn’t simply disappear, but they hope Camp Celebration can offer resources and coping skills children can use long after the camp ends. “We want them to go on and have a healthy idea of grief,” said Paige Butler, director of Hospice and Palliative Care at Baptist Health. “Unfortunately, grief is a part of life and you’re going to always have that. So we want to give them the tools just in the short period of time to understand that it’s OK to talk about their loved one. It’s OK to remember their loved one.”First Alabama medical cannabis dispensary expected to open next month
