Four baby foxes, or kits, will be reunited with their mother on Tuesday night after being rescued from a drainage pipe by firefighters in York County.

Four baby fox es, or kits, will be reunited with their mother on Tuesday night after being rescued from a drainage pipe by firefighters in York County . Raven Ridge Wildlife Center received a call from someone who owned the property on Delta Road after they noticed two baby fox es crawled into a drainage pipe .

The property owner was able to free one of the kits on their own, which was later seen reunited with its mother. However, they weren't able to free what they thought was one other kit. The wildlife rescue tried to use their own tools to free the kit for about an hour and a half before calling in reinforcements from Alliance Fire and Rescue Services, who were there within 10 minutes. 'They were just amazing. If we didn't have them to help us, these foxes would have never made it,' said Tracie Young, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator and the director of Raven Ridge Wildlife Center. The fire department was able to dig up the dirt around the pipe and cut it in half. Young then went down into the hole to retrieve the kit. She removed one fox successfully and discovered there were actually three more hiding in the pipe. Firefighters had to dig deeper and cut the pipe again in order to reach the remaining kits. Unfortunately, one of the foxes didn't make it. Young said they think the fox was down there so long that it suffocated.'That was a very small area for five foxes,' said Young. Kits will be reunited with mom Young said the kits are old enough to venture out on their own, but their mom will always be nearby. She said the mom may have gotten spooked, and the kits may have crawled into the pipe, looking for a place to hide. It is natural for foxes to hide in holes in the ground, and kits tend to follow one another, said Young, explaining how they may have ended up in the pipe. 'It's important to cap water pipes that baby animals can get themselves entrapped in.'Young said that the kits have been checked and cleared for injuries and will be reunited with their mom on Tuesday night. It's important for the rehabilitation center to reunite the fox and her kits as soon as possible, so the foxes don't get too comfortable and imprint on humans. A mother fox will look for her kits for up to four to five days, said Young. The rehabilitation team will place the kits in a box outside and play kit calls on their phones in order to attract the mother. What to do if you see a baby animalWith spring blooming and more babies being born in the wild, Young said it's important to contact your local wildlife center if you see a baby animal you think is struggling. 'Sometimes these animals don't need your intervention. So, your first instinct to go get the baby and bring it in the house isn't always necessarily the right thing to do,' said Young. She said that animal mothers are experts at finding their babies and do a much better job at raising their kids than humans do.
