Alabama Work Zone Safety act reaches Gov. Ivey’s desk after bicameral compromiseAccording to Alabama Department of Transportation, fatal crashes in construction zones have declined, but injury crashes continue to rise.
“ didn’t wake up and say ‘hey, I want to go to put my life on the line for someone who’s reckless,’” said Sen. Josh Carnley Tuesday morning. ”They’re just doing their job and trying to make Alabama a better place to work and to live.”
According to the bill, people caught speeding in a work zone would get a civil traffic citation in the mail the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. The citation would include a description of where and when the violation happened.
“For us in Alabama, it begins as a pilot program,” said Tony Harris, a spokesperson with ALDOT. “We’ll assess how it works. Hopefully we’ll see measurable improvements in safety.”
In the legislature, the collection of fines was a hot topic. Some lawmakers had said the fine and the overall system outlined in the bill would lead someone to have to prove innocence rather than the courts have to prove guilt.
“My hope in this is that we don’t collect a dollar; that there’s no ticket given and that everyone who goes to that work zone goes home that night,” he said.
