Federal officials have charged a Canadian man in connection with data that was stolen from the Texas Republican Party. Canadian authorities arrested Aubrey Cottle , 37, of Oshawa , Ontario , on Wednesday and plan on pursuing charges against him under Canadian law, according to Friday statement from Margaret Leachman , acting U.

READ ALSO: 'Worst of the worst': Man gets 60 years in child sex abuse, porn case A redacted version of the federal criminal complaint, which was unsealed Thursday, shows Cottle faces a charge of unlawfully transferring, possessing or using a means of identification with the intent to commit, or aid or abet, or in connection with unlawful activity under state or federal law. A conviction is punishable by a maximum of five years in prison. Cottle is accused of gaining unauthorized access to a third-party web hosting company's system to deface and download a backup of the Texas Republican Party's web server, which officials said contained personal identifying information, according to the complaint. The data was then distributed and made available for download online. Cottle is alleged to have claimed responsibility for the Sept. 11, 2021, attack on the site, the document states. Additionally, data that was stolen from the Texas Republican Party was found on his electronic devices, according to federal officials. Social media sites and Cottle's LinkedIn page identify him as being affiliated with the group Anonymous. CNBC has described Anonymous as one of the world's most infamous hacker groups. Called 'hacktivists,' Anonymous is said to use coordinated cyberattacks on corporations, governments or other groups or political causes. Assistant U.S. Attorney G. Karthik Srinivasan is prosecuting the Cottle case, which is being investigated by the FBI Austin Cyber Task Force, with assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police and the Durham Regional Police Service.
