A toxic chemical escaped into the air at an Ashtabula plant Saturday.

ASHTABULA, Ohio - A toxic chemical escaped into the air at an Ashtabula plant Saturday. Titanium tetrachloride leaked from the INEOS facility, creating a white plume over the plant. INEOS confirmed the unplanned release.

On Saturday, April 11th, the INEOS Pigments facility experienced an environmental release of titanium tetrachloride. Upon discovery of the release, plant personnel took action to immediately contain the release. The site is under control and at stable operations. Although no regulatory reporting is required due to the small amount of material released, INEOS has reported the event to all the appropriate regulatory agencies.

There were no injuries or environmental impact associated with the event. The company’s highest priority is the safety of its employees and the local community.A white plume over INEOS plant in Ashtabula on April 11.

Workers on their second day of striking, standing outside the plant, were among the first to notice the plume. “To the right of that facility there was a huge white cloud,” said Steven Anzevino, a union representative for the striking workers.“Five minutes after the release, the alarm in the facility went off,” Anzevino said. Workers say the alarm carries for miles, warning the area of a potentially dangerous environmental hazard.

The CDC says titanium tetrachloride can cause irritation to eyes and skin. Breathing it in large amounts can be severely damaging.“If the wind was blowing at us, all of that would’ve went into our lungs,” Anzevino said.

The striking workers say the release happened because they aren’t in the facility. “We believe it happened due to the inexperienced operators that they have in there, not knowing exactly how to mitigate the issue they had, when the experienced workers are out here on strike,” Anzevino said.

The company says the amount of Titanium Tetrachloride released does not warrant reporting to proper agencies, but did despite regulations.
