ASHTABULA , Ohio - The Ashtabula City Health Department shared on Wednesday that it was notified of an increase in norovirus viral levels in untreated wastewater .

According to the release, the levels were found at the Ashtabula Wastewater Treatment Plant, and notification pertaining to norovirus was sent after the most recent sample surpassed the threshold for the first time in the season. Increasing viral concentration is wastewater is an indicator of potential outbreak, and/or high transmission to the public. The health department said most people get better withing one or two days and will have no long-term effects from the illness.

Individuals can take proper steps in preventing the spread by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water. According to the CDC, hand sanitizer alone does not work well against norovirus. The virus can also stay in stool for two weeks or more even after symptoms have subsided, so it is imperative to stay vigilant by thoroughly washing hands after using the restroom. Those who are sick should not prepare, handle food or care for others.

Wait at least two days after symptoms have stopped. This is especially important for those who work in restaurants, schools, daycares, long-term care facilities or any other places where someone may expose the virus to vulnerable people, the health department says. Also, the health department said to be aware that noroviruses are relatively resistant to heat and can survive in temperatures as high as 145 degrees. Quick steaming processes will not heat foods enough to kill norovirus.

Plus food contaminated with norovirus will look, smell and taste normal.
